Justice Dept. Might Reverse Bush Pro-religion Policies Under Holder

Wednesday, February 04, 2009

Rob Boston, Assistant Director of Communications of Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU), predicts in an article posted on the AU website Tuesday that Eric Holder, the new US attorney general, will lead the US Dept. of Justice away from Bush policies favoring religion.

Recalling the Bush administration's poor record on keeping religious out of politics, Boston quotes AU's Executive Director, Barry W. Lynn: “Expecting the Bush administration to defend religious liberty is a little like asking Col. Sanders to babysit your pet chicken. This administration has repeatedly worked to destroy true religious freedom by merging church and state.”

Boston suggests that, under Holder's leadership, the DOJ will reverse much of the pro-religion emphasis developed during the last eight years.  Under Bush, the department watered down its previous emphasis on civil rights for policies favoring the religious right.  Justice Department lawyers anticipate significant changes and, according to a report in Monday's New York Times, many of them "cannot wait."  Read the original article here.
